Dr. Samir Al-Busaidi is an assistant professor in the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department at the College of Engineering, at Sultan Qaboos University (SQU). He has been affiliated to the College of Engineering ever since graduating from SQU with his BSc degree. He further pursued his studies at Imperial College, UK, for his MSc. degree in Communications and Digital Signal Processing, and at Curtin University, Australia, for his PhD in visible light communications. In the decades of teaching experience of multiple courses in the field of communications, he has overhauled and developed courses, most notably in optical fiber communications and satellite technology. He has also worked with students in multiple final year projects. In a first within SQU, he co-supervised a project on a cubesat demonstrator, which was then further developed successfully into its second iteration at the beginning of June 2023 for weather observation over the Sultanate of Oman and neighboring regions. Working closely with the local industry to leverage students’ theoretical knowledge through hands on experience, he is passionate on capacity building in the fields of satellite and space technologies, optical communications, and promoting free and open source software. Currently, he is heading the satellite group at SQU, which at this moment in time, is in the process of establishing a space laboratory within SQU premises, in collaboration with the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MTCIT). The satellite group at SQU are keen to layout the theoretical and practical foundations of “Space at Reach” to students, professionals and amateurs alike within the Sultanate of Oman, in hand with the MTCIT policies aligned to Oman’s Vision 2040.
